Tim Rapley is Professor of Applied Health Care Research in the Department of Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing at Northumbria University. He serves as Deputy Theme Lead for Enabling Methodologies in the North East & North Cumbria Applied Research Collaboration. A medical sociologist by training, he holds a BA in Human Geography, MA in Sociology, and PhD in Sociology from the University of London.
His research investigates healthcare implementation, organization, and qualitative methodologies through three domains: 1) Implementing care using Normalization Process Theory (NPT) across diverse settings; 2) Organizing care experiences for patients with chronic conditions; and 3) Examining qualitative research practices. He co-developed the NPT toolkit for implementation science.
Recent publications focus on evaluating health interventions for vulnerable populations, particularly older adults with multimorbidity (yoga trials) and children with neurodisabilities. Methodologically, his 2024 work emphasizes implementation measurement tools (NoMAD, ORIC) and tailored implementation strategies.
He actively supervises seven PhD students researching topics including non-representational theory in evaluations, self-care for disabled children, and mental health care innovation.
