Tim O'Reilly is a Visiting Professor of Practice at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP), where he contributes expertise on technology-driven societal transformation. As founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media, he has shaped global tech discourse for 35+ years by popularizing concepts like "open source software", "web 2.0", "the Maker movement", and "government as a platform".
His research interests focus on the intersection of technology, economics, and public policy, particularly addressing challenges in the "WTF economy" (a term he popularized) and antitrust regulation for internet-scale platforms. He authored WTF? What’s the Future and Why It’s Up to Us (2017) and is currently writing a book on rethinking antitrust in the digital age.
Tim actively engages in civic tech through board roles at Code for America, PeerJ, Civis Analytics, and PopVox. He also partners with O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures to support early-stage technology ventures.
