Professor Tim Mason is a leading academic in sonochemistry at Coventry University. He holds honorary chairs at Chongqing Medical University, Nanjing Institute for Environmental Science, Lviv Polytechnic University, and Kazan State Technical University. His research focuses on sonochemical applications in industry, food processing, and biotechnology. Mason earned his BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Southampton University (1964-1970) and a NATO Fellowship at Amherst College. He pioneered the field of sonochemistry, establishing the first international symposium on the topic in 1986 and co-authoring foundational books and over 300 papers (h-index 56). He is Editor-in-Chief of Ultrasonics Sonochemistry (Impact Factor 4.321) and co-founded the European Society of Sonochemistry.
His research spans industrial applications (e.g., algae oil extraction, medical textiles) and biomedical innovations (targeted drug delivery via ultrasound). Recent grants total £192,857 from UK and EU sources, including work on antibacterial medical textiles and algal biofuel projects. Awards include a D.Sc. from Southampton (1996) and recognition in the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition (2009) and Research Councils UK’s “Big Ideas for the Future” (2011).
Key contributions include advancing microwave/ultrasonic processes for manufacturing and elucidating ultrasound’s frequency-dependent mechanical/chemical effects. Collaborations include the Algae Biofuel Challenge consortium and Foresight reviews on UK manufacturing futures.
