Tim Haughton is a Professor of Comparative and European Politics at the University of Birmingham, affiliated with the Department of Political Science and International Studies and the School of Government. He serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Elections, Democracy, Accountability and Representation (CEDAR) and was Head of POLSIS (2016–18) and Director of CREES (2012–14). He is an elected member of the University Senate (2023–27).

His research focuses on electoral and party politics, political campaigning, and the domestic politics of Central and Eastern Europe (Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria) and EU politics. Current projects include The New Party Challenge, corruption in electoral politics, and democratic resilience.
Recent publications analyze party dynamics in Central and Eastern Europe, corruption in elections, and digital campaigning. His work has been funded by the ESRC, Leverhulme Trust, and Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation.

He has supervised 14 PhD students to completion and currently advises PhD projects on East-Central Europe, party politics, and minority voting behavior. He co-founded the REPRESENT network (2020–4), linking academia and policy-making.
