Professor Tim Harcourt serves as Industry Professor and Chief Economist at the Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where he also leads the Centre for Sport Business and Society (CSBS). Previously, he was Professor of Practice in Economics at UNSW Business School (2011-2021) and Chief Economist of Austrade (1999-2011). His career uniquely bridges academic economics, government policy, and public communication.
Harcourt earned his education from the University of Adelaide, the University of Minnesota, and Harvard University, establishing a strong foundation for his interdisciplinary approach to economics. His academic journey reflects a commitment to connecting theoretical knowledge with practical policy applications across multiple continents.
Specializing in international trade and sports economics, Harcourt has made economics accessible to the general public through his TV shows 'The Airport Economist' and 'The Great Transformation,' along with his Airport Economist 24/7 TV channel. His research examines how economic principles apply to real-world business challenges, particularly Australia's role in global trade and the business dynamics of sports organizations. He frequently analyzes the intersection of economics, policy, and sports management, making complex concepts understandable for diverse audiences.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on the business aspects of Australian sports leagues, international sports expansion, and economic policy. Harcourt's work demonstrates how sports organizations navigate revenue generation, audience engagement, and global market opportunities in an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape, while also addressing broader economic issues affecting Australia's position in the global economy.
Throughout his career, Harcourt has advised two State Premiers and three Federal Cabinet Ministers, served as an Expert Panel Member to the Fair Work Commission on Minimum Wages and Superannuation, and worked as an International Economist with the Reserve Bank of Australia. His practical experience in both public and private sectors across Australia, USA, and UK provides valuable context for his academic work.
At UTS, Harcourt leads initiatives that connect academic research with practical policy applications through the Institute for Public Policy and Governance. His work bridges the gap between theoretical economics and real-world business practice, particularly in international trade and sports economics, creating valuable insights for policymakers, business leaders, and the general public.
