Tim Groeling

Tim Groeling is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at UCLA. He specializes in Political Communication, Media Bias, and the intersection of New Media with political discourse. Groeling holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from UC San Diego and a B.A. from DePauw University.

His research explores how journalistic norms shape political party messaging, particularly in unified government settings. Key works include When Politicians Attack (2010), which won the Goldsmith Book Prize and the Gronbeck Award, and War Stories (2009), co-authored with Matthew Baum. He has served as UCLA Communication Studies Department Chair (2010–2016) and Director of the UCLA Communication Studies News Archive Digitization Project.

Awarded the APS Best Article Prize (2008) and the Apple Distinguished Educator title, Groeling’s work spans media bias measurement, presidential communication, and digital media effects. His grants include the National Science Foundation’s CDI-Type II grant (2010) and UCLA Senate Research grants.

Publications highlight elite rhetoric’s impact on public opinion during conflicts, media framing of foreign policy, and experimental studies on partisan cues. Groeling’s research emphasizes the role of media in shaping political realities and democratic governance.
