Till Van Rahden is a Full Professor of Modern European and German History at the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, affiliated with the Department of Literatures and World Languages. His research focuses on democracy's fragility, gender history, Jewish communities in modern Europe, and the intersection of civil society with religious diversity.
Education: PhD from Universität Bielefeld (1999), MA from Johns Hopkins University (1993). He held the Canada Research Chair in German and European Studies (2006–2016). Awards include the Fraenkel Prize and Mercator Fellowship. He contributes to journals like Historische Zeitschrift and WestEnd.
Teaching: Courses include German modern history, post-war Germany, and German cultural studies. Supervised over 20 MA and PhD students. Research affiliations include CÉRIUM (International Studies), the Centre Marc Bloch (Berlin), and the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (Vienna).
Publications: Over 30 books and articles, including Demokratie: Eine gefährdete Lebensform (2019) and Jews and other Germans (2008). Explores how democratic legitimacy emerges from everyday interactions and public spaces, emphasizing emotions and moral conflicts.
