Tiffany N. Florvil is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of New Mexico (UNM), specializing in modern European history with a focus on race, gender, and transnational social movements. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina (2013), an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2007), and a B.A. from Florida State University (2003).
Her research explores Black German movements, transnational feminism, and the African diaspora, particularly analyzing the role of emotions, activism, and intellectual traditions shaped by figures like Audre Lorde. She co-edited Rethinking Black German Studies (2018) and authored Mobilizing Black Germany (2020), which examines the 1980s–1990s Black German movement.
Florvil co-chairs the Black Diaspora Studies Network at the German Studies Association and co-founded digital platforms like H-Black-Europe and H-Emotions. She has received numerous awards, including finalist status for the ASWAD Outstanding First Book Prize (2021) and honorable mention for the DAAD/GSA Book Prize (2021).
Her teaching focuses on gender, race, and modern European history, with courses like Gender and Race after Hitler and Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll (capstone). She actively engages in public scholarship through blogs like Black Perspectives and the African American Intellectual History Society.
Florvil’s work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing transnational solidarity and intersectional approaches to history. She has organized panels on Black European diaspora activism and emotion studies, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary and community-engaged research.
