Tia Attia serves as an Academic Tutor at the University of Sunderland within the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. With expertise spanning drug delivery systems, cancer biology, and a background in marketing and business, they integrate research and teaching to provide high-quality education for undergraduate and postgraduate students across pharmaceutical science disciplines.
They hold a BSc in Pharmacy and BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science from the University of Greenwich, followed by an MSc in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology conducted under Dr. Giulia Getti's supervision. Their PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences was completed at the University of Sunderland under Professor Amal Ali Elkordy's mentorship, focusing on formulation science and cancer biology, specifically developing liposomal nanovesicles using microfluidic systems for targeted breast cancer therapy.
Research interests center on advanced drug delivery systems, particularly lipid-based nanoparticles like liposomes and niosomes, for treating chronic conditions including psoriasis and cancer. They employ innovative approaches such as microfluidic methods and 3D skin models, while also investigating reactive oxygen species (ROS) modulation in tumorigenesis and the therapeutic potential of antioxidants like ascorbic acid and alpha-lipoic acid in cancer treatment.
Their scholarly contributions include significant publications in pharmaceutical sciences with focus areas in nanomedicine and targeted therapy, demonstrating consistent research productivity across multiple high-impact journals and conference presentations.
They have received notable recognition including funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Impact Acceleration Account to develop a novel liposomal formulation for psoriasis treatment with commercialization prospects.
Teaching responsibilities encompass multiple modules in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Sciences including Pharmaceutical Manufacture, Essential Study Skills, Dosage Forms and Pharmacokinetics, Research Project, Advanced Formulation Science, and Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology. They serve as module leader for Advanced Business And Marketing Skills In The Cosmetics Industry and supervise Pharmaceutical and BioPharmaceutical Formulations MSc students.
