Thorsten Herfet is a Professor and Chair of the Telecommunications Lab at Saarland University, a position he has held since August 2004. He is affiliated with the Department of Computer Science and has played key leadership roles, including Vice President for Research & Technology Transfer (2014–2017) and Dean of Computer Science & Mathematics (2006–2008). His research spans advanced telecommunications, 5G+ networking, deep learning applications, and computational videography.
His research focuses on energy-, latency-, and resilience-aware networking, deep learning in telecom, high-mobility OFDM systems, and computational videography. These areas reflect a strong interdisciplinary approach combining signal processing, machine learning, and network optimization for next-generation media and communication systems.
While no individual publications are listed, the supervised PhD theses indicate a consistent research trajectory in adaptive media transport, delay-aware communication, 3D video, and QoS management, suggesting a long-term focus on efficient, intelligent, and user-centric networked multimedia systems.
