Thora Arnardottir

Thora Arnardottir is a Researcher in the Department of Applied Sciences at Northumbria University, with expertise in biomaterials, biomineralization, and microbial fabrication. Her work bridges architecture, biology, and material science to create sustainable living materials.

Education:

• PhD in Architecture (Bacterial Sculpting) from Newcastle University, completed in March 2023.
• MA (Hons) in Architecture from the Institute of Advanced Architecture in Catalonia, awarded in September 2017.
• BA (Hons) in Architecture from Arts University Bournemouth, completed in June 2014.

Her research explores processual approaches to forming with living matter, including bacterial cellulose, microbial-induced calcite precipitation, and fungi-mediated self-healing concrete. Recent publications focus on bioreactors, engineered living fabrication, and responsive biomaterials.

Thora has contributed to exhibitions like Living Construction and Living Manufacture, and participated in organizing the ACADIA 2023 conference. She is active in interdisciplinary collaborations, particularly around sustainable materials and the UN SDGs.
