Thomas Ågotnes is a Professor of Information Science at the University of Bergen, Norway, where he leads the Logic and AI (LAI) research group and serves as Head of Teaching in Information Science. He also holds the prestigious Changjiang (Yangtze River) Professorship at the Institute of Logic and Intelligence, Southwest University, Chongqing, China.
His research focuses on modal logic, formalizing reasoning about information exchange, and modeling interaction in multi-agent systems. He integrates formal logic and computer science with frameworks from social sciences such as game theory, social choice theory, and social network analysis. His work spans interdisciplinary domains, bridging theoretical rigor with practical applications in AI and social modeling.
Professor Ågotnes has received notable honors, including the AAMAS 2009 Best Paper Award and the 2018 Changjiang Scholar Award. He actively contributes to the academic community through leadership roles on senior program committees for IJCAI and AAMAS, and as co-chair of the 2020 Scandinavian Logic Symposium and tutorials co-chair for AAMAS 2021.
At the University of Bergen, he teaches courses such as INFO104: Formal Methods in Information Science, INFO207: Social Networks Theory, and INFO382: Logic for Multi-Agent Systems. He is also instrumental in launching a new bachelor program in AI starting in autumn 2021. Current PhD advisees include Mina Young Pedersen (joint with Marija Slavkovik) and Shuliang Dong (joint with Truls Pedersen).
