Thomas Yen serves as Technical Director of the University of Wisconsin Internet of Things (IoT) Lab and Engineering Design Course instructor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering within the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His research spans critical domains in human-centered engineering:
- Ergonomics and Human Factors Engineering
- Occupational Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Engineering
- Surgical/Telerobotic control interfaces
- Medical Instrumentation/Devices and Healthcare IT
- Medical Design Manufacturing and Laboratory Automation
- IoT integration across biomedical applications
Dr. Yen developed a commercially marketed video-based biomechanical data acquisition system for repetitive motion injury studies, leveraging his Human Factors expertise to design error-resistant instrumentation interfaces. His current research focuses on patient interaction with medical websites and objective quantification of surgical procedures. As IoT Lab Technical Director, he actively promotes IoT implementation across diverse biomedical domains while integrating Industrial Engineering principles with quality/risk control throughout medical device design processes from concept to manufacturing.
