Thomas Y. Levin is an Associate Professor in the Department of German at Princeton University, active since 1990. His scholarship spans Frankfurt School critical theory, Weimar cinema history, media archaeology, surveillance studies, and sound culture.
Research examines the intersection of technology, perception, and cultural politics, with particular emphasis on media reproducibility and visual rhetorics. His work traces historical continuities in surveillance practices from Bentham to contemporary digital monitoring.
Key publications analyze technological mediation of art and the cultural politics of observation. Levin co-founded the Princeton-Weimar Media Studies Summer School and has held fellowships at multiple international research institutions including IFK Vienna and Collegium Budapest.
