Thomas W. Gallant is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He specializes in Modern Greek History and Archaeology, with a focus on cultural identity, power dynamics, and socio-political transformations in the Mediterranean region. He currently serves as co-director of the UC San Diego Center for Hellenic Studies, a hub for interdisciplinary research on Greek history and culture. Previously, he directed the Center from 2014 to 2016 and served as president of the Modern Greek Studies Association.
- Research Interests: Modern Greek History, Mediterranean Studies, 19th Century Sociopolitical Dynamics, Cultural Archaeology, Banditry and Piracy in Global Contexts, Athenian Social History.
- Major Works: Includes The Edinburgh History of the Greeks, Murder on Black Mountain, and upcoming publications like Modern Greece: Society, Politics and Economy and Athens: A Social History.
His current projects explore themes of cultural identity in the Ionian Islands, transnational banditry’s impact on modern states, and the socio-political evolution of Athens. Dr. Gallant has held leadership roles in academic organizations, fostering collaboration between international scholars and institutions.
