Thomas Udem

Prof. Dr. Thomas Udem is a Research Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ), leading the Foundations of Quantum Physics group. His work focuses on precision spectroscopy of atomic hydrogen, testing quantum electrodynamics (QED), and developing optical hydrogen clocks. Udem's ERC Advanced Grant supports his research to uncover new physics beyond the Standard Model through ultra-precise measurements. He currently oversees a team including postdoctoral researchers, doctoral and Master's students, and interns.

His research interests include high-precision spectroscopy of hydrogen transitions (e.g., 1S-3S and 2S-nP), trapped atomic hydrogen systems, and XUV frequency combs. These efforts aim to redefine the second using fundamental constants and improve measurements of the Rydberg constant. Udem’s group collaborates on experiments such as the 1S-3S transition spectroscopy and the development of an optical hydrogen clock, leveraging frequency comb techniques.

Notable achievements include an ERC Advanced Grant (2024) and contributions to resolving the proton radius puzzle. Udem’s team actively seeks candidates for doctoral and postdoctoral positions, emphasizing precision metrology and quantum optics. His work bridges theoretical predictions with experimental validation, addressing gaps in our understanding of fundamental physics.
