Thomas Sattler is a Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political Science at the University of Geneva. Previously, he held professorships at the London School of Economics & Political Science and University College Dublin, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University and New York University.
Dr. Sattler received his PhD in political science from ETH Zurich and completed the Program for Doctoral Students in Economics at the Study Center Gerzensee of the Swiss National Bank. His academic journey includes significant research positions at leading institutions across Europe and the United States.
Sattler's research focuses on the political impact of globalization and monetary and fiscal policies in developed and emerging countries. His work examines how international cooperation and economic openness constrain democratic politics, particularly how voters respond to fiscal austerity and exchange rate shifts. His current research projects include 'Contingent signals: the political preconditions for successful economic stabilization,' 'How to design politically sustainable responses to fiscal pressure,' and 'Cooperation and Conflict in Chinese-US Economic Relations,' all supported by Swiss research foundations.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the intersection of international economic policy and voter behavior, with particular attention to austerity measures, fiscal policy in emerging markets, and US-China economic relations. The research employs diverse methodologies including experimental surveys, comparative analysis, and quantitative political economy approaches.
Sattler actively supervises doctoral students working on topics related to international political economy, including US-China competition in Africa, developmental financial policy, and voter perceptions in the Euro area. His teaching spans international relations and political economy at bachelor, master, and PhD levels in both English and French.
