Dr. Thomas Roeske serves as Director of the Prinzhorn Collection at the Psychiatric University Clinic of Heidelberg University Hospital, a position he has held since 2002. His academic foundation includes a doctorate focusing on Hans Prinzhorn and a habilitation scholarship from the German Research Foundation (DFG) for his project 'The Individual in the Image – The Idea of Self-Expression in Art and Art Theory around 1800'. Previously, he held positions as curator at Neuer Kunstverein Aschaffenburg and assistant at Goethe University Frankfurt's Art History Institute.
His research examines art created by psychiatric patients, analyzing both historical and contemporary works to explore perspectives of marginalized individuals. Key interests include:
- Therapeutic and communicative functions of patient art
- Decoding symbolic languages in outsider artworks
- Challenges to conventional art historical frameworks
- Cross-disciplinary connections between psychiatry and aesthetics
As museum director, he oversees thematic exhibitions showcasing the Prinzhorn Collection's 5,000+ works, including recent discoveries like Gudrun Bierski's encoded textiles and Josef Forster's paintings.
