Thomas Parker is an Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Vassar College, where he has served since 2005. He holds a PhD from Columbia University and specializes in early modern literature, philosophy, and cultural studies with a focus on French terroir and culinary culture. His research explores the intersections of food, history, and cultural identity, including marginalized foods and their sociocultural significance.

His research interests include the rhetoric of Blaise Pascal, the concept of terroir, and subnatural foods. He received the Gourmand’s Special Jury Prize for Best Wine Book of 2015 for Tasting French Terroir. Parker teaches courses on French literature, utopian thought, and sensory-based cultural studies. He pioneered a transdisciplinary project at Duke University exploring 'subnature'—a concept addressing disregarded natural elements in cultural practices—and coordinated events blending culinary reenactments with academic discourse.
His current project, Subnature and Culinary Culture, examines historically marginalized foods through interdisciplinary collaborations. He has also engaged with public humanities initiatives, including a podcast feature on Gastropod and a Terroir Tapestries interactive project.
