Thomas Newton is a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine and Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He serves as the Pediatric Subject Matter Expert for the National Capital Region to the Defense Health Agency and is affiliated with the John P. Murtha Cancer Center Council.

His work on Healthcare Transitions addresses the challenges of shifting patients with chronic conditions from pediatric to adult care systems, particularly within military healthcare. He also investigates Population Health metrics to improve outcomes for adolescent and young adult cancer patients.
His research spans neuroblastoma biology (side populations, Notch signaling), sickle cell disease management, and survivorship care models. Key trends in his work include cancer stem cell dynamics, transitioning care protocols, and immunological-hematological comorbidities.
