Thomas Mölg

Professor Thomas Mölg serves as Deputy Managing Director at the Institute of Geography, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), where he holds the Chair of Climatology. His research focuses on climate systems in extreme environments, particularly cold regions including high mountains and polar zones. As an active academic leader, he has held significant administrative roles including Managing Director of the Institute (2018-2020 and 2024-2025) and membership on the Institute's Board of Directors since 2014.

Professor Mölg's research expertise centers on the physics of climate systems with emphasis on atmosphere-cryosphere interactions, space/time dimensions in climate phenomena, and advanced numerical modeling techniques utilizing supercomputing resources. His work bridges theoretical climate science with practical applications for understanding environmental change in vulnerable regions.

Professor Mölg maintains significant editorial responsibilities as Editor-in-Chief for the journal The Cryosphere of the European Geosciences Union (since 2016) and the EGU's Encyclopedia of Geosciences (since 2025). He also serves as Spokesperson for the Climate Working Group of the German Society for Geography (2023-2025) and previously served on the Earth Sciences jury of the French National Science Foundation (2018-2020).

As head of the Climatology Working Group at FAU, Professor Mölg leads research efforts focused on understanding climate dynamics in extreme environments, with particular attention to high mountain regions and polar zones where climate change impacts are especially pronounced.
