Thomas Mrokon

Professor Thomas Mrokon holds the Professorship for Design and Digital Construction at the Institute of Architecture, Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Appointed in 2021 and serving as Head of the Architecture program since 2024, he leads the development of digital construction curriculum with a focus on training students as 'digital master builders.'

Professor Mrokon's research interests span the intersection of architecture and digital technology, with particular expertise in computational design, AI applications in construction, immersive spatial teaching using VR/MR technologies, and additive manufacturing. His work emphasizes the integration of digital tools across the entire architectural planning and production process, developing what he calls a 'digital thread' to connect design through to manufacturing.

Before his academic appointment, Professor Mrokon founded the company 'monomer' specializing in serial production of unique pieces using 3D printing technologies, and served as a specialist planner in integrated design at Drees&Sommer. His industry experience includes implementing digital and algorithmic planning processes for geometrically complex educational buildings, with a focus on holistic, integrated planning and production processes involving all specialist engineers and contractors.
