Thomas Mackey is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Outdoor Education at Northland College. He holds a PhD in Environmental Education and Interpretation from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Food Studies from Syracuse University, an MEd in Urban Science Instruction from Boston College, and a BA from Colgate University. His work focuses on equity-centered education, indigenous science epistemology, and anti-colonial land rights advocacy. Mackey coordinates the Environmental Education Minor and teaches courses like Urban Outdoor Education and Advanced Topics in Diversity and Inclusion in Outdoor Education.
His research emphasizes critical approaches to wilderness education, environmental justice, and the intersection of migration rights with ecological sustainability. He actively engages with professional networks through workshops such as 'Indigenous and Western Science: Can We Learn to See with Both Eyes?' and serves on the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee for the Wisconsin Association for Environmental Education.
Mackey's community involvement includes work with the Indian Community School and panels like 'Lack of Racial Diversity in American Wilderness Parks.' His personal interests span sports like hurling and gaelic football, and he collaborates with his partner in diversified vegetable farming.
