Thomas Lorentzen is a Professor at the Department of Sociology, University of Bergen (UiB), with a focus on life-course transitions, economic marginalization, and social security benefits. His work employs quantitative methods and register data to analyze welfare state dynamics, labor market integration, and educational outcomes in Scandinavia.

Research interests span life-course sociology, welfare policy, and labor market dynamics, particularly examining how social assistance systems affect youth transitions, gender-segregated vocational outcomes, and refugee integration. Recent work explores the impact of welfare reforms on employment, health trajectories, and educational segregation in Norway's largest cities.
His publications include 15+ peer-reviewed articles and reports, often in collaboration with Nordic institutions like OsloMet, Nordic Council of Ministers, and Norce Norwegian Research Centre. Projects include Coming of Age in Exile (CAGE) (2017–2020) and studies on early school leaving across Scandinavia. He contributes to debates on activation policies, social investment, and intergenerational poverty in the Nordic context.
