Thomas Koval serves as a Lecturer in the MS in Biotechnology program at the Center for Biotechnology Education within the School of Advanced Academic Programs at Johns Hopkins University. He has been teaching in the program since 2002, instructing Advanced Cell Biology I, Advanced Cell Biology II, and Radiation Biology courses. Prior to his current role, Dr. Koval held faculty positions at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C., and Mayo Medical School/Mayo Graduate School in Rochester, MN.
Dr. Koval's educational background includes:
- BS in Biology from The Pennsylvania State University
- PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology/Radiation Biology from The Ohio State University
- Postdoctoral fellowship in Physiology and Biophysics/Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
His research focuses on cell and molecular biology, particularly cellular radiation damage/repair mechanisms, stress-inducible cellular processes, and insect cell culture. Dr. Koval pioneered the establishment of the cell/molecular basis for insect radiation resistance—a phenomenon previously only documented in cartoons—and has published extensively in peer-reviewed national and international scientific journals on these topics.
Dr. Koval's scientific recognition includes:
- Excellence in Teaching Award in Biotechnology
