Thomas Korankye is an Assistant Professor in Personal and Family Financial Planning at the Norton School of Human Ecology, University of Arizona. His research focuses on financial well-being, student loan debt impacts, retirement planning, and household financial decision-making. He leads the FINDWELL Lab, exploring financial decisions and well-being. Korankye holds a PhD in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University alongside multiple international degrees in finance and management.
Education includes a PhD in Personal Financial Planning (Texas Tech University), MSc in Finance (Texas Tech University), MSc in International Fisheries Management (University of Tromsø), and degrees from the University of Skövde (Sweden) and University of Ghana (first-class honors in Administration/Banking and Finance).
His research interests emphasize how financial management practices influence well-being, particularly in contexts involving student debt, retirement security, and cross-cultural financial behavior. Recent work examines mental accounting theories, personality impacts on financial regret, and policy implications of student loan burdens. Over 30 peer-reviewed publications demonstrate expertise in behavioral finance, household economics, and public policy.
Recognitions include the 2022 Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning Outstanding Reviewer Award and the 2021 AFCPE® Outstanding Symposium Research Award. His interdisciplinary approach spans economics, psychology, and public health, evidenced by studies linking pet ownership to senior well-being and vitamin D levels to cognitive function.
Research grants include the National Endowment for Financial Education fellowship. Teaching focuses on retail financial services, family investment planning, and communication strategies for financial counselors.
