Thomas Kemple is a Professor in the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Arts. His work bridges classical and contemporary social theory with interdisciplinary approaches to the humanities.
- Education: MA and PhD in Social and Political Thought from York University (1992)
Research focuses on classical social science, post-structuralist theory, feminist/queer theory, and the intersection of sociology with literature and visual culture. His scholarship reinterprets works by Marx, Weber, Simmel, Durkheim, and Freud through modern lenses like decolonization, media studies, and science-technology frameworks.
Recent publications explore civic capitalism, decolonizing education, and the visual display of sociological concepts. He co-edits major handbooks and contributes to international journals such as Journal of Classical Sociology and Theory, Culture & Society.
