Thomas Icard is the Clarence Irving Lewis Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Computer Science (by courtesy) at Stanford University, holding a primary appointment in the Department of Philosophy with secondary affiliation in Computer Science.
His research integrates Cognitive Science, Formal Philosophy, and Logic to investigate resource-bounded rationality, causal inference mechanisms, and probabilistic reasoning under computational constraints. He examines how agents form causal models and make decisions when faced with limited cognitive resources, bridging philosophical foundations with empirical cognitive science and AI applications.
Recent publications reveal strong interdisciplinary trends across philosophy, computer science, and psychology, with emphasis on causal abstraction for interpretable AI systems, quantitative-qualitative reasoning divides, and theoretical foundations of generative models. His work consistently connects formal logical frameworks with experimental validation in human cognition.
Professor Icard has mentored fifteen advanced students across Philosophy, Symbolic Systems, Computer Science, and Linguistics, including Krzysztof Mierzewski (2020), Declan Thompson (2023), Cristina Ceballos (2023), Duligur Ibeling (2024), and Atticus Geiger (2024), demonstrating exceptional cross-departmental supervision capacity in both doctoral and master's programs.
