- M.Sc., University of British Columbia (1988)
- Ph.D., University of British Columbia (1993)
His research focuses on applying green chemistry to pulp and paper science, including catalytic hydrogenation of lignin chromophores, brightness stabilization of mechanical pulps, and development of fire-retardant wood fibers. He has pioneered proprietary processes for cellulose nanocrystals and chemical modification of pulp fibers.
The 15 most recent articles reflect his work in lignin chemistry, bleaching agents, NMR/organometallic methods, and process monitoring, with collaborations spanning UBC and industrial partners.
