Thomas Hayden is a Professor of the Practice at Stanford University's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and Graduate Program in Journalism. Since 2008, he has directed the Master of Arts in Earth Systems, Environmental Communication Program, blending his expertise in science communication with environmental advocacy. Prior to Stanford, he was a prominent journalist with Newsweek and US News & World Report, later transitioning to freelance science writing.

Research Interests: His work focuses on science communication and environmental journalism, emphasizing the translation of complex Earth systems and scientific concepts for public audiences. He integrates digital media strategies and journalistic ethics into his teaching.
Publications: Co-authored On Call in Hell (2007) on battlefield medicine, Sex and War (2008) on warfare evolution, the 9th Revision of National Geographic Atlas of the World (2010), and co-edited The Science Writers' Handbook (2013). These works span military health, cultural anthropology, cartography, and science publishing.
Collaborations: Partnered with his wife, science journalist Erika Check Hayden, at Johns Hopkins University and the Banff Centre Science Communications workshop. He also contributed to the Leopold Leadership Program for environmental scientists.
