Thomas H. DeLuca serves as the Cheryl Ramberg-Ford and Allyn C. Ford Dean of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. He holds a doctorate in Soil Science from Iowa State University, complemented by master's and bachelor's degrees from Montana State University and University of Wisconsin-Madison respectively. His international research experience includes positions in Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Research expertise spans: (1) Soil biogeochemistry in fire-affected ecosystems; (2) Biochar applications for soil improvement; (3) Nitrogen fixation pathways in forest ecosystems; and (4) Microbial mediation of nutrient cycling. His work connects fundamental soil processes with applied forest management challenges.
Current graduate advisees include Jess Blunn, Ben Gustafson, and Cooper Miller. Publication trends reveal sustained focus on pyrogenic carbon dynamics, with recent work expanding into microbial mediation of nutrient transfer in moss systems and biochar applications in rangelands. Long-term studies examine nitrogen fixation persistence in boreal moss carpets and carbon accumulation patterns in disturbed forests.
