Dr. Thomas Giesecke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Geography at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. His research focuses on paleoecology, particularly vegetation dynamics and ecosystem change over millennial timescales. He specializes in analyzing plant remains in Quaternary deposits to understand climate impacts and human-environment interactions.
Key expertise includes pollen analysis, landscape reconstruction, and data analysis. He leads projects such as the Dutch Pollen Atlas initiative, funded by NWO, aiming to synthesize historical vegetation data. He also chairs the European Pollen Database and serves as an Associate Editor for Journal of Vegetation Science and Vegetation History and Archaeobotany.
