Prof Thomas Fath is Deputy Director of the Dementia Research Centre and Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Macquarie University. Previously, he held leadership roles at UNSW Sydney, including Head of the Neurodegeneration and Repair Unit and Neuronal Culture Core Facility. He earned a PhD from Heidelberg University (2002) and has conducted research at prestigious institutions like The Scripps Research Institute and Children's Hospital at Westmead.
Education/Academic qualifications include a PhD in Neurobiology (Heidelberg, 2002), Diplom (BSc) in Neurobiology (Heidelberg, 1998), and additional certifications in Data Science and University Learning and Teaching.
Research interests focus on the cytoskeleton's role in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's, motor neuron disease, and brain trauma. His lab employs cell cultures, genetically modified mice, and advanced imaging to study actin dynamics and tropomyosin isoforms. Current projects target synaptic actin cytoskeleton characterization, actin-based therapies, and neuronal morphogenesis mechanisms.
He has secured ARC and NHMRC grants, led multiple projects (e.g., tau spread mechanisms in Alzheimer's), and authored over 80 publications. Recent articles emphasize neuroprotective therapies, actin regulation, and synaptic pathology. Awards include the 2015 Vice Chancellor’s Award for Student Learning Contributions.
Editorial roles include Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience and Scientific Reports. He chairs the Australian Society for Biochemistry’s Cell Architecture group.
