Thomas E. McKone

Thomas E. McKone is a Senior Staff Scientist and Deputy for Research Programs at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), where he leads the Sustainable Energy Systems Group within the Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division. He also holds an Adjunct Professor position in the Environmental Health Sciences department at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health, contributing to interdisciplinary research in exposure science and environmental health.

McKone’s research spans human-health and ecological risk assessments, chemical transport and transformation in environmental media, modeling exposure pathways (dermal, inhalation), and uncertainty evaluation in environmental models. His work integrates life cycle assessment and technoeconomic analysis, with applications to

• energy systems (carbon sequestration, biofuels)
• industrial pollutants
• agricultural impacts
• building ventilation and indoor air quality

His recent publications focus on carbon capture and sequestration water impacts, low-temperature PEM fuel cell economics, lignin’s role in biofuel sustainability, and ventilation’s effect on chronic health risks. Key articles highlight exposure modeling, brine management in geologic storage, and uncertainty analysis in lifecycle assessments.

McKone has received prestigious honors, including the 2019 Berkeley Lab Lifetime Achievement Award for pioneering contributions to exposure science, a 2011 Environmental Science & Technology Top Paper (second runner-up), and the 2003 Constance L. Mehlman Award from the International Society of Exposure Analysis.
