Thomas Delahunty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at Maynooth University, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He holds dual qualifications as a psychologist (Chartered Psychologist, BPS) and secondary-level teacher. His research focuses on critical psychology in education, postcolonial theory, decolonial methodologies, STEM education equity, and the intersection of education policy with authoritarian political trends. He chairs the RAISE (Research, Application, and Inclusion in STEM Education) group and co-edits Irish Educational Studies.
Key roles include Programme Director for the BSc Education programme and leadership in EU-funded projects like ERASMUS+ LIFT (Lesson Study in Future Teacher Education). His work critiques neoliberal educational reforms, examining how psychological frameworks (the 'psy-complex') shape childhood constructs and promote authoritarianism. Recent research explores LGBTQ+ equality in education and the impact of spatial skills on STEM performance.
Awards include the Maynooth Teaching and Learning Fellowship (2022) and multiple Frank Oppenheimer Awards (2018, 2013). He actively supervises doctoral students (e.g., Dr. Catriona Curtin, Dr. Feargal Flanagan) and serves on committees for teacher education policy and research governance.
