Thomas DeCarlo is an Assistant Professor in Tulane University's School of Science & Engineering. His research examines coral reef responses to climate change, ocean acidification, and biogeochemical processes using sclerochronology and environmental monitoring. He earned a Ph.D. from MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (2017) and a B.A. from University of San Diego (2012).
Research integrates:
- Coral calcification mechanisms under acidification
- Nutrient-current interactions affecting bleaching
- Paleoclimate reconstruction from coral cores
- Upwelling impacts on reef ecosystems
DeCarlo's work spans the Red Sea, Great Barrier Reef, and Indo-Pacific. Recent publications advance bleaching prediction models and document four centuries of ocean warming impacts. He directs the Sclerochronology Lab and develops analytical tools like CoralCT for coral core analysis.
