Thomas Cubbin is a Senior Lecturer at the HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design, University of Gothenburg, specializing in the cultural and environmental significance of craft and design. With a PhD from the University of Sheffield and an MA in History of Design from the Royal College of Art, he has taught as a Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art and held leadership roles at HDK-Valand, including Head of Unit at Campus Steneby in Dals Långed. He co-developed the BFA in Crafting Futures, focusing on materials, place, ecology, and technology, and is a board member of Halmens Hus, Sweden’s straw craft museum.
His research spans Russian/Soviet history, queer communities, and critical historiographies of urban design’s impact on craft practices. Publications highlight intersections of fetish, sustainability, and Soviet design. He co-supervises doctoral student Gustav Thane and serves in the PARSE working group.
Recent articles explore queer spatial design, Soviet semiotics, and material reuse, reflecting his expertise in cultural and historical design analysis. He is actively engaged in innovative craft pedagogies and critical design research.
