Thomas Cressy is a George Kingsley Roth Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, specializing in the Anthropology of Music. His research explores the global reception of European baroque music, affect theory, material anthropology, and intersections of music with ritual and religion. He earned his PhD at Cornell University, focusing on the reception history of J.S. Bach in Japan as a Japanese MEXT and Japan Foundation scholar.
His current projects include publishing a book based on his doctoral work and investigating music-making practices in 19th-century multinational communities in Nagasaki, Kobe, and Yokohama. This research will examine how these historical legacies shaped cultural interactions.
