Thomas Crellen is an Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore's Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health and holds an adjunct position at the University of Glasgow. As an infectious disease epidemiologist, he focuses on pathogen transmission, evolution, and control—particularly neglected tropical diseases like schistosomiasis and foodborne trematodes. His interdisciplinary work spans field-data collection, statistical modeling, and parasite genomics.
- Education: PhD in Infectious Disease Epidemiology (Imperial College London, 2013–2017), MSc in Medical Parasitology (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 2012–2013), BA in Biological Anthropology (University of Cambridge, 2008–2011)
Crellen's research explores pathogen dynamics in Southeast Asia under changing landscapes, demographics, and urbanization. Key areas include Neglected Tropical Diseases, Pathogen Genomics, and Epidemiological Modeling, with applications to both parasitic infections and SARS-CoV-2 transmission. His publications reveal trends in parasitic disease diagnostics, genomic pathogen analysis, and immune waning dynamics.
- Honorary Research Associate, McDonald Institute, University of Cambridge (2024–2027)
- SPI-M-O Award for Modelling and Data Support, UK Government (2022)
- Sir Henry Wellcome Fellowship, Wellcome Trust (2019–2024)
Crellen's career includes Wellcome Trust Fellowships at Oxford and Glasgow, computational biology work in Thailand, and field epidemiology with Médecins Sans Frontières in the Central African Republic. His current work develops context-relevant disease control interventions in Southeast Asia.
