Thomas Böttcher is a Professor at the University of Vienna, holding a joint appointment in the Faculty of Chemistry and the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science (DOME). His research focuses on understanding chemical strategies underlying microbial interactions, particularly the role of metabolites in mediating communication between microbes and their hosts. His group develops synthetic chemistry approaches to create species-specific antibiotics and anti-virulence compounds, with a vision toward chemical microbiome engineering.
He leads a research team investigating the biosynthesis of antimicrobial agents and chemical probes targeting virulence-related enzymes. Notably, he received an ERC Consolidator Grant to study the chemistry of prophage induction in bacteria. His lab’s work bridges fundamental microbiology with applied chemistry, aiming to engineer microbiome interventions.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary studies on quinolone signaling, microbiome-host interactions, and drug discovery. Teaching activities are listed on the University of Vienna portal. The group actively recruits PhD and postdoc researchers through open positions at their lab website.
