Thomas Bachmann

Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Bachmann holds the position of Professor and Head of the Group of Automotive Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Appointed as of January 2022, he leads research in vehicle technology and drive technology within the Thuringian Innovation Center Mobility (ThIMo). Previously, he served as a vehicle project manager in BMW Group's Digital Car and Automated Driving division, overseeing fully automated driving pilot fleets. His expertise spans automotive engineering, safety, driving dynamics, and driver assistance systems. Alongside research, he actively contributes to teaching in the Automotive Engineering program.

Education: Studied mechanical engineering and served as a research assistant at TU Darmstadt's Group of Automotive Engineering before transitioning to industry in 1997.

Research Focus: Combines academic leadership with practical industry experience to advance automated driving, vehicle safety, and mobility technologies. The Group was renamed to 'Fahrzeugtechnik' under his leadership to reflect expanded research scope.
