Thom van Dooren is a Professor of Environmental Humanities and Deputy Director of the Sydney Environment Institute at the University of Sydney. He holds a Humboldt Research Award and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. His research explores ethical and cultural dimensions of species extinction, focusing on human entanglements with threatened species and places. Key works include Flight Ways, The Wake of Crows, and A World in a Shell, which address multispecies ethics and ecological loss.
Van Dooren has held visiting positions at institutions worldwide, including the University of Oslo and MIT. His awards include the Ludwik Fleck Prize and Gold Nautilus Book Award. He leads collaborative projects like Living on the Edge, uniting researchers, artists, and communities to address environmental challenges. His work bridges humanities and ecology, emphasizing ethical responsibility in a time of global ecological crisis.
Van Dooren’s digital projects, such as multimedia essays on endangered species, engage public audiences. He advocates for mourning as a response to extinction, exploring grief’s role in fostering ecological care. Current initiatives include The Craft of Poisoning, a book in progress analyzing toxic relationships in human-environment interactions.
