Dr. Thijs Hagendijk serves as Assistant Professor in Technical Art History at Utrecht University's Department of History and Art History within the School of Humanities. His research bridges technical art history with the history of chemistry through innovative performative methodologies.
Hagendijk specializes in investigating historical artisanal knowledge systems with particular focus on sustainable practices in historical arts. His research employs hands-on methods including reworking, re-enacting, and reproducing historical techniques, materials, and processes to understand practical knowledge transmission.
His work has been featured in prominent media outlets including the Dutch television program Het Geheim van de Meester (The Secret of the Master) where he serves as an expert, an NRC Handelsblad interview on historical silversmithing techniques, and academic publications on artisanal manufacturing processes.
Current research projects include:
- Vuur en Vernieuwing – De glasblazerijen van Nederland 1581-heden (Fire and Renewal - Glassblowing in the Netherlands 1581 to present) as supervisor, funded by NWO
- Willem van Laer's 18th C. Guidebook for Upcoming Gold- and Silversmiths as executor and contact person
- Previously participated in the EU ERC Consolidator Grant-funded ARTECHNE project (2016-2021) investigating artistic techniques
Hagendijk completed his dissertation in 2020 on reading and writing practices in early modern arts, establishing his expertise in technical documentation within historical artistic communities.
