Prof. Thiess Büttner holds the Chair of Public Finance at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) since 2010. Previously, he was CESifo Professor of Public Finance at LMU Munich (2004–2010) and head of the Public Sector department at the ifo Institute. He has extensive international experience, including research stays at the University of Kentucky and Oxford. He serves on the Academic Advisory Board of Germany’s Federal Ministry of Finance and chairs the German Stability Council’s independent advisory board.
Education:

His work focuses on tax competition, fiscal federalism, and empirical analysis of taxation. Recent topics include EU fiscal rules compliance, VAT fraud prevention, and energy policy. Methodologies include microdata analysis, quasi-experiments, and policy evaluation.
