Thibaud Marcesse is an Assistant Professor of Comparative and South Asian Politics at Boston College's Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Political Science. Previously, he was a Lecturer in Contemporary India at King’s College London. He holds a Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University (2018), a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University, and degrees from Sciences Po Paris. His research focuses on institutional change in poverty alleviation and its impact on political strategies in rural India, particularly examining the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and interactions between elected officials and bureaucrats in policy reform contexts. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and published in World Development.
Research Interests: Political Economy of Development, Institutions, Political Parties, Ethnicity, Politics of Foreign Aid, and South Asian Politics. He explores themes like distributive politics, corruption, and decentralization in India. Current projects include a book manuscript on bureaucratic-political dynamics in policy implementation.
Awards: National Science Foundation Award for field research in India.
Professional Experience: Prior to academia, he worked in international development with UNICEF, NDI, and Chemonics. Teaching includes courses on South Asian Politics and Democracy in the Global South. His hobbies involve restoring vintage French automobiles and motorbikes, including a 1954 Renault 4CV and a 1981 Royal Enfield Bullet.
