Dr. Theon E. Hill is an Associate Professor of Communication at Wheaton College, specializing in African American rhetoric across political, religious, and cultural contexts. He joined the faculty in 2014 and holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Purdue University. His research focuses on how African American rhetorical traditions influence public discourse and social change, particularly in politics, social movements, religion, and hip-hop culture.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Communication from Purdue University (2013). His courses include Communication Criticism, Rhetoric of Rap Music, and Political Style. Key areas of expertise are African American Rhetoric, Race & Ethnicity studies, and the Obama presidency.
Dr. Hill's publications span journals like Rhetoric & Public Affairs and Public Relations Review, addressing topics such as Black political discourse, image restoration theory, and prophetic rhetoric. His recent work includes analyzing Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearings and Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential campaign.
He has contributed book chapters to volumes on rhetoric and power, American politics, and decolonized theology. His research bridges historical and contemporary issues, emphasizing marginalized voices in public discourse.
