Theodoros Rakopoulos is a Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Oslo's Department of Social Anthropology (SAI), serving as Vice-Head of Department and Master's programme convener. He holds a PhD from Goldsmiths, University of London (2012), with postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Bergen and University of Pretoria. His work bridges economic/political anthropology with regional studies in Italy, Greece, and Cyprus.
Research focuses on mafia-antimafia dynamics in Sicily, commodification of citizenship in Cyprus, and solidarity economies during Greece's crisis. Key themes include cooperative movements, conspiracy theories, austerity's social impacts, and decolonial sovereignty debates. He has authored/co-edited 6 books including Passport Island: The Market for EU Citizenship in Cyprus (2023) and From Clans to Co-ops (2017).
Publications (15+ articles/year) span Current Anthropology, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, and Focaal. Awards include Wenner-Gren grants and the RAI-Sutasoma Prize. Teaches courses on economic anthropology, legal anthropology, and contemporary theory. Engages public discourse through Greek media commentary and 5 poetry/fiction books in Greek (translated into 9 languages).
