Theo Tyson is a Lecturer in Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD), affiliated with the Department of Architecture. Their work focuses on curatorial practices that explore sociocultural implications of race, class, gender, identity, and sexuality through fashion, art, and cultural lenses.
Research interests center on creating spaces for non-white Black women and LGBTQI+ communities to reclaim narratives, challenging white heteronormative frameworks. Tyson employs fashion as a 'universal language' to address power dynamics like colorism, misogyny, and misogynoir. Notable projects include co-curating Being Muholi: Portraits as Resistance and advising on Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love.
Community engagement includes collaborations with the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (as Penny Vinik Curator of Fashion Arts), Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and programs like MFA Teen and HomeSchool initiatives. Teaching includes Curatorial Practices in the Museum: From Art to Audience in Spring 2025.
