Thandiwe Nleya is a Professor in the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science at South Dakota State University (SDSU), where she has held academic roles since 2003. Her research focuses on organic crop production, cereal, oilseed, and pulse crops management, bioenergy crops, dryland cropping systems, and saline/sodic soil phytoremediation. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in organic plant production, crop physiology, and global food systems.
Education: B.S. in Agriculture (University of Zimbabwe, 1984), M.S. in Agronomy (Southampton University, 1988), and Ph.D. in Crop Science (University of Saskatchewan, 1997).
Research Interests: Dryland cropping systems in the Northern Great Plains, cover crops integration, bioenergy crops like camelina and brassica species, and soil health management. Her work emphasizes sustainable agriculture practices and climate-resilient crop systems.
Awards: 2017 Associate Editor Excellence Award (Agronomy Journal) and 2008 ASA Education Materials Certificate of Excellence for her work on proso millet production.
Professional Roles: Technical editor for the Agronomy Journal, chair of ASA Production Systems Division, and member of national grant review panels. She leads research at the McFadden Biostress Laboratory, exploring crop responses to environmental stressors like salinity and sodicity.
Her work bridges agronomic research with practical applications, addressing global food security challenges through crop diversification and sustainable land management strategies.
