Teunis Jansen

Teunis Jansen is a Professor at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) and holds a concurrent professorship at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources. His work centers on quantitative fisheries ecology, with a particular focus on Arctic pelagic fish and sustainable fisheries management.

Education:

Research Focus:
Teunis Jansen specializes in population dynamics, stock assessment, and ecosystem-based fisheries management in Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. His research integrates acoustic surveys, otolith microchemistry, genetic stock identification, and statistical modeling to understand fish migration, feeding ecology, and reproductive strategies. He leads research on commercially important species such as Atlantic mackerel, capelin, blue whiting, and Atlantic bluefin tuna.

Scientific Contributions & Awards:

• ICES Service Award (2024) for chairing the North Western Working Group (NWWG) from 2021–2024
• Described two new amphipod species: Westwoodilla tone and Westwoodilla helle (2002)
• Published over 77 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to numerous ICES reports and policy documents

Advising & Teaching:
He has supervised four PhD students to completion and is currently mentoring postdocs and graduate researchers. He teaches Fisheries Technology at DTU in Sisimiut, Greenland, and has delivered workshops across Europe and Africa.

Projects & Leadership:
He coordinates and participates in major EU and Nordic research projects such as MAKE-IT and EASIMACK, focusing on mackerel stock assessment and sustainable management. He also chairs expert groups within the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), providing scientific advice to policymakers and industry stakeholders.
